Die Entstehung eines speziellen Quilts in drei Tagen

The making of a special quilt in three days.

Tag Eins: Einen Minecraft Quilt für einen grünliebenden Teenager planen, zuschneiden und auslegen.

Day one: planning a Minecraft quilt for a teenager who likes green. Cutting and laying out the design.

Zweiter Tag: Alles ordentlich zusammenfassen …

Tag Drei: Das Top mit der Rückseite verstürzen, eine lange Seite offen lassen, fast wie ein Bettbezug. Wenden und in zehn Zentimeter Abständen “Tunnel“ abnähen. Jeden dieser 19 Tunnel mit einem Becherchen Glaskügelchen befüllen. Im zehn Zentimeter Abstand quer über die gesamte Decke quilten. Alle 19 Tunnel füllen, quer abnähen. 19 Tunnel füllen, abnähen, 19 … wiederhole im ganzen 12 mal. Beim 13. Mal wird nicht nur abgenäht sondern die Nahtzugabe umgeknickt und das Ganze geschlossen. Fertig.

Day three: Turning over the top and backing, leaving one long side open, almost like a bedcloth. Sewing lines in ten centimeter intervals to make 19 “tunnels“. Filling these tunnels each with a tiny cup filled with glassbeads. Quilting a line across in a ten centimeter interval to the closed long side. Filling the 19 tunnels again. Sewing another line. Filling the tunnels again … repeat twelve times. Closing the edge after the last filling by folding the seam allowance to the inside and then sewing the line. Done.

Und hier die Vorgeschichte: Mein Bruder fragte mich im Mai, ob ich ihm eine Gewichtsdecke nähen kann. Diese werden gerne von unruhigen Schläfern genutzt, um besser zu schlafen. Manchen reicht da eine schwere Bettdecke, ihm wohl nicht, außerdem sind diese meist sehr warm, er wollte was dünnes.

Also recherchiert, gelesen, überlegt. Es gibt viele zu kaufen, aber immer schön kuschelig warm. Es gibt diverse Anleitungen um selber eine zu nähen, aber Dinkelspelz oder Kirschkerne oder Körner als Füllung fand ich nicht so richtig hygienisch. Plastikkügelchen? Das Material will ich doch weitestgehend vermeiden. Dann kam mir die Idee: Glas. Glaskügelchen sind zwar ganz schön teuer, dafür aber schwer, die Decke müsste damit doch bestimmt schön dünn bleiben. Noch ein bisschen im Netz suchen und den Hersteller diverser Glasartikel anschreiben war dann auch schnell erledigt. Gut, in die Waschmaschine sollte man die Decke mit den Glasperlen nicht stecken, aber welche Haushaltsmaschine packt schon 9 kg? Da man die Decke sowieso von Hand in der Badewanne waschen müsste, eigentlich eine super Lösung.

Glaskügelchen bestellt, Stoff rausgesucht, Decke genäht und befüllt, UFF! Ganz schön schwer das Teil. Mein Bruder war begeistert! Und sein Sohn auch. *lachtimmernoch* Weil: Der Junior hat sie sich unter den Nagel gerissen, oder anders ausgedrückt, in sein Bett geschleppt. Was danach passierte? Mein Neffe fragte, ob ich ihm auch eine nähe. Deswegen also die Entstehung seiner Gewichtsdecke.

Ach ja, mein Bruder wird noch bis Ende November auf seine Decke verzichten müssen, weil dann erst diese Minecraft Decke verschenkt wird. *g*

How I came to make this quilt. In May my brother asked me if I could and would make him a weighted blanket. Restless sleepers use it to quiet them down and for easier sleeping. I looked online and found lots of blankets to buy, but they were always cosy and warm, and my brother wanted something cool, or at least as cool as possible. There are also quite a lot of tutorials on how to sew your own, which is fabulous, but I didn’t think cherry stones or spelt hulls or other kind of grains very hygienic. Since I want to avoid plastic, I had the idea to use small glass beads. Looking for them online and asking the supplier about the usage in such a blanket was easy. You shouldn’t put it in the washing machine, but which machine would be able to take 9 kg anyway? So washing by hand in the bathtub is a given.

I ordered the beads, got some fabric, made the blanket and filled it. Wow! It’s really heavy. My brother loved it. So did his son! *is still laughing* He dragged it off to his own bed and wouldn’t give it back. What happened next? My nephew asked me to sew him his own blanket, and that’s why this blogpost was written.

By the way, my brother will have to wait for his blanket until late November, because that’s when this Minecraft blanket will be gifted. *g*

Ich bekomme einfach nicht genug

Nach dem Quilt ist vor dem Quilt. Und weil ich vor ein paar Jahren sogar extra eine (oder drei… ) Anleitung (en) für die Sechseck Delfine gemacht habe, und im Oktober so ganz ohne Handarbeiten da saß, habe ich mich daran gemacht, wenigstens eines dieser Bilder in die Tat um zu setzen.

After the quilt is before the quilt. And because I wrote a pattern (or three…) for the hexie dolfins and because I was without anything to occupy my hands, I started on one of the designs.

So weit bin ich schon, das geht diesmal so schnell…. schier unglaublich. Die Sechsecke haben allerdings auch eine Kantenlänge von 1,5 cm. Diesen Quilt habe ich damals schon Meeresrauschen benannt… hui, Oktober 2015. Der musste lange warten….

 

It´s so fast, I am utterly amazed. But the hexies are a bit bigger, 1,5 cm. I called this quilt Oceanmurmurs back in the day… ui, October 2015. This one had to wait….

Meerbedeckt: Label und Aufhängung anbringen

Weil jeder Quilt ein Label braucht und Meerbedeckt ja auf der Nadelwelt in Karlsruhe ausgestellt wird, musste beides entworfen und angebracht werden.

Dazu habe ich mich nochmal richtig reingekniet und für das Label ganz viele noch kleinere Sechsecke geheftet und zusammen genäht. Während die Sechsecke beim Meerbedeckt eine Kantenlänge von 7mm haben, sind die Kanten der Sechsecke für das Label 5 mm lang. Und es hat so einen Spaß gemacht!

Because every quilt needs a Label and Meerbedeckt will be shown at the Nadelwelt in Karlsruhe , I had to make both and put it on the quilt.

I really got going on the Label and made even smaller hexies than the quarter inch ones for Meerbedeckt, these are 3/16 inch hexies… and it was so much fun!

Meerbedeckt Fototermine

Nachdem der Quilt fertig war, mussten natürlich Fotos her. Hier zu Hause – nicht so ideal. Außerdem hat die Arbeit was besonderes verdient. Deswegen durfte Meerbedeckt mit in den Kurzurlaub an den Bodensee. Und ein Tag wurde zum Fototermin, Meerbedeckt in Meersburg!

Now that the quilt was finished, I wanted fotos. Here at home – not really the best location. And all this work deserves something special, that´s why I took Meerbedeckt on our short trip to Lake Constance, where one day was dedicated to the fotoshooting: Meerbedeckt in Meersburg, a beautiful town with Castle at the lake.

Vielen, vielen Dank nochmal an meine Helfer! Meine Tochter, die die 5 kg Quilt wieder und wieder und nochmal mit mir hochgehalten hat, drei Schritte rechts, doch wieder nach links, noch bissl höher, und klar steigen wir auf die Mauer, da fallen wir schon nicht runter… und an meine Freundin, die Geduldig alle Orte mit analysierte, und Meerbedeckt absolut Profimässig abgelichtet hat! Und an ihre zwei Töchter, die alles ohne murren und maulen mitangeschaut haben!

Thank you again to my helpers! My daughter, who held the 5 kg quilt up with me again and again, who went three steps to the right and back again to the left, a bit higher and sure we´ll climb the wall, we won´t fall… and to my friend who helped find the perfect locations and who took professional fotos of it! And to her two daughters, who were so patient without complaining!

Mein Zeitplan hinkt mir hinterher

Und zwar gewaltig. Ich wollte bis spätestens Weihnachten meinen Quilt fertig gequiltet haben.

Aber fangen wir damit an die Einzelteile in die richtige Reihenfolge zu bringen.

And fast. I wanted to be finished with quilting by Christmas.

But let’s start by getting everything in order.

Quilt und Rückseite sind aufgespannt, das Vlies muss noch an den richtigen Platz, aber dann kanns losgehen.

Quilt and backing are on the machine, the batting has to be put in the right place, but then I can start.

Zuerst habe ich die Fäden schön lang gelassen, damit ich sie nach dem quilten zwischen Top und Rückseite im Vlies versenken kann. Aber ich habe jeden Fisch, jedes Tier einzeln umrandet, alle Pflanzen mit Blättern oder Linien versehen, musste gefühlte tausend mal die Fäden aus dem Weg legen – bis ich beschloss, das es reicht, wenn ich am Anfang und Ende kleine Stiche mache und die Fadenenden einfach gleich abschneide. Soll ja eine Tagesdecke werden, kein Kuschelquilt. Das war eine Erleichterung!

First I left the threads long, so I could tuck them between top and backing when finished with the quilting. But I outlined every fish and animal, gave leaves or lines to every plant and had to push thread out of the way so many times that I decided to make small stitches at the beginning and the end and cut of the threads right away. It’s going to be a bedthrow and not for cuddling, so that should work.

Und auf einmal war ich am anderen Ende angelangt.

And suddenly I had reached the other end.

Und ich war fertig mit quilten und Meerbedeckt runter vom Rahmen. Und noch so lange bis Weihnachten.

And the quilting was done, and Meerbedeckt off the machine. And so much time left until Christmas.

Trotz oder wegen ständigem Farbwechsel und stop and go habe ich 17,5 Stunden gequiltet.

Instead or because of changing thread colours and starting and stopping all the time it took me 17,5 hours to quilt it.

Das Top ist fertig, die Rückseite kam, und das Vlies hat mir eine superliebe Freundin besorgt, 50% Baumwolle / 50% Bambus. Fühlt sich toll an!

Nur noch kurz das Wohnzimmer umräumen, um zu sehen ob auch alles passt.

The top is finished, the backing came and a wonderful friend got me the batting, 50% cotton / 50% bamboo. Feels good!

Und weiter gehts.

Das Top von Meerbedeckt ist zwar fertig, aber jetzt gehts weiter, damit das gute Stück vom 3.-5.Mai auf der Nadelwelt in Karlsruhe auch ohne rot zu werden, hängen kann.

Dazu habe ich nach und nach alle Papierchen aus dem Rand gepult und diesen mit einer Naht gesichert.

The top of Meerbedeckt is finished, but there is more to be done so I can show you a finished quilt at the Nadelwelt in Karlsruhe, which is from the 3rd to the 5th of May.

So I pulled out all the papers from the edge and secured it with some stitches.

Leider habe ich vergessen das letzte Papierchen zu fotografieren. Aber damit könnt ihr bestimmt leben.

Dafür habe ich die Rückseite fotografiert. Hier ein paar Fotos.

Sadly I forgot to take a picture of the last paper I took out, but you can hopefully all live without it.

Ein Lebenszeichen

Leider war es lange still hier. Das lag zum einen an einer Schreibblockade (lies: Faulheit), zum anderen am Blogsterben und der Angst, etwas falsch zu machen (lies: DSGVO).

Mein Blog ist privat, ich mache keinen Profit damit, kann jederzeit Kommentare löschen, wenn jemand das möchte, und wer mir folgt kann sich selber wieder austragen. Ich bin ein großer Verfechter des Denk-dir-dein-Ding Grundsatzes. Benutze-dein-Hirn! sollte in Großbuchstaben an jeder Werbetafel und jedem Straßenschild stehen, finde ich.

Und ich finde es traurig, das ich Ärger bekommen kann, weil jemand seinen Kopf nicht benutzt. Ich habe mir viele Gedanken gemacht, viel gelesen, viele Leute befragt und komme zu dem Schluss:

A sign of life

Sadly it was very quiet her. One reason was writers block (read: laziness) and another was the dying of blogs in Europe and the fear to do the wrong thing (read: GDPR).

My blog is private, I make no profit, I can delete any comment any time should someone ask, and whoever follows me can unfollow me, too. I am a big advocate of the Think-for-yourself thingy and Use-your-brain! should be written on every board and every streetsign, in my opinion.

It is very sad that I can get in trouble because people don’t use their braincells. I read a lot about it, talked to people, thought long and hard and came to the conclusion:

I will go on blogging!

Das Top von Meerbedeckt ist fertig!

Am 3.9.2018 habe ich um 21:40 Uhr den letzten Stich gemacht.

On September third at 9:40 am I made the last stitch.

Der letzte Stich am Meerbedeckt Top

Und um 23:54 Uhr waren alle inneren Papierchen rausgepult.

And at 11:54 am all inner papers were pulled out.

Und heute habe ich nochmal die Anzahl Sechsecke pro Reihe gezählt, die Anzahl der Reihen und überhaupt alles drei- und vierfach angeschaut, gezählt und gerechnet.

Es sind 50509 Sechsecke mit einer Kantenlänge von 7mm.

234 komplette Reihen und eine mit 82 Sechsecken.

117 Reihen haben 216 Sechsecke und die anderen 117 Reihen 215 Sechsecke.

(Hoffentlich habe ich richtig gezählt und gerechnet, falls jemand auf die Idee kommt nachzurechnen….außerdem möchte ich auf keinen Fall, dass sich die Zahl der Sechsecke ändert, weil 5 und 9 schon immer meine Lieblingszahlen waren!)

Das Top ist 245 cm breit und 230 cm hoch.

Ich bin gespannt, ob sich die Maße durchs quilten noch ändern.

Mein eigentlicher Plan war, am 9.9.2018 alle einzelnen Eckchen zu 32 Platten zusammengenäht zu haben. Diese Platten wollte ich dann bis Weihnachten 2018 von den Papierchen befreien und erst zu vier Reihen und diese dann zum kompletten Top vereinen. Um aber letztes Jahr im Sommerurlaub nicht ohne Arbeit für mein Meisterwerk wegzufahren, und weil die Korkplatten, auf die ich die Eckchen gesteckt hatte, so unhandlich waren, habe ich die ersten acht fertig genähten Stoffplatten mitgenommen und auf der Fahrt und den Campingplätzen in den Niederlanden Papierchen gepult und die ersten acht Platten zusammen gefügt. Darüber habe ich letztes Jahr hier berichtet. Nachdem dann diesen Januar die nächsten acht Platten zur Einheit wurden – wer darüber genaueres erfahren möchte, kann das hier nachlesen – habe ich fleißig jede Minute außer Haus benutzt, um jede fertige Platte zu entpapieren und dann zusammenzunähen. (Es war kurz mal Panik angesagt im Hause Meerbedeckt, hier der Bericht dazu.) Aber insgesamt ging das Papierchenpulen und zusammennähen erstaunlich fix und schwuppdich – das Top ist fertig.

Jetzt kann ich mir mit dem quilten Zeit lassen und da ich bisher weder Rückseite noch Vlies und auch keinen blassen Schimmer habe, wie ich das Top überhaupt quilten will, ist das auch ganz gut so.

Und im Mai nächstes Jahr werde ich Meerbedeckt auf der Nadelwelt in Karlsruhe ausstellen! Genauere Angaben folgen hier.

Today I counted the hexies of one row and the rows altogether, looked at everything and counted and added everything three and four times.

There are 50509 hexagons with an edge of 7 mm or 1/4“ .

234 complete rows and one with 82 hexies.

117 rows with 216 hexies and the other 117 rows with 215 hexies.

(I hope I counted and added right in case somebody gets a different sum…. I don’t want the number to change, because 5 and 9 always were my favourite numbers.)

The top is 245 cm wide and 230 cm high.

I wonder if it will be different after quilting.

My original plan was to be done combining all single hexies into 32 tiles by September 9th 2018. After that I wanted to depaper the tiles and combine them to four rows and these to the whole top. But because I wanted to work on my masterpiece while going away on holidays, and because the cork tiles with the pinned single hexies were so awkward to pack up for travelling, I took the first eight finished fabrictiles with me and depapered on tour and the campgrounds in the Netherlands. I told that story here. This year in January I combined the next eight tiles – whoever wants to know about that can read here – after that I used every minute I was away from home to depaper every finished tile and combine them. (There was a short panic at house Meerbedeckt, here’s the post about it.) All in all the depapering and combining the tiles went quite fast and schwuppdich – the top is done.

Now I can take my time quilting, which is wonderful, because I neither have batting nor backing nor any kind of clue on how to quilt it.

And in May I will be showing Meerbedeckt at the fair Nadelwelt in Karlsruhe!

Dies und das

Falls jemand Interesse hat, ich bin jetzt auch auf instagram unterwegs, auch unter rlebt.

Da ist das posten noch einfacher…. und deshalb habe ich hier auch schon lange nichts mehr geschrieben, es kostet einfach ganz schön viel Zeit….

Aber jetzt wird hier mal aufgeholt.

Posting there is so much faster, that’s why I neglected this blog.

But now I’ll catch up here.

Nähtag mit meinen Mädels! Natürlich habe ich viel gequatscht und geschaut, aber auch einiges genäht. Dieses Top zum Beispiel, lauter geschenkte tumbler, Becher auf deutsch? Oder Trapeze…

Die hatte ich beim letzten Nähtag ausgelegt und so eingepackt, das ich sie genau so zusammen nähen kann. Und es kam doch wieder anders. Trotz Foto und genauem hinschauen habe ich zwar die Stoffe richtig zusammengestellt, aber leider nicht darauf geachtet ob die kurze oder die lange Seite oben hingehört. Mit Hilfe ist es aber jetzt fertig. Nur noch ein Rand und wegen der Größe muss ich nochmal nachdenken.

Sewing day with my gals! So I talked a lot and looked what the others were sewing, but I am very satisfied with the things I got done. This top for example, with gifted tumblers I layed out in September last year…. and took a pic and stacked carefully and took close looks at the picture while assembling it. And got it wrong anyways because I ignored which side should be up. But I got it done with help and have to think about the size and borders and quilting now.

Und dann diese coole Tasche, mit Druckknöpfen kann der Boden zusammen gefasst werden, dann hat sie zwei Innentaschen. So ein cooles Teil! Und sind die Stöffchen nicht Traumhaft?

And then this little bag, you can gather the bottom with snaps and then there are two compartements inside instead of just one big one. And isn’t the fabric fabulous?

Was zwischen Weihnachten und dem Neuen Jahr geschah

Erstmal wurde gepackt und ab gings an die Ostsee. Davon habe ich ja hier schon berichtet.

Aber ich habe ja versprochen den Fortschritt an meinem riesigen MiniSechseck Quilt zu teilen, da lief nämlich einiges!

Jetzt habe ich schon fast das zweite Viertel zusammen genäht. Die Papier Teilchen, um die die Stoffsechsecke geheftet sind, sind alle draussen.

I’m almost done sewing all the eighth of the second part of four together. And all the paper pieces that were covered by fabric are gone.

Und hier noch ein Blick auf die letzten beiden Viertel, allerdings nicht mehr aktuell, Fotos dazu folgen.

Worauf ich noch stolz bin: Bonnie Hunter, eine berühmte amerikanische Quilterin die jeden Tag bloggt und viele Bücher geschrieben hat und super tolle Tips gibt, hat meinen Quilt schon ein paar mal erwähnt, und erst letztens sogar meine ganze Email mit Fotos in ihrem blog veröffentlicht.

Another thing I am very proud of is that Bonnie Hunter, a welknown american Quilter who blogs every day and writes books and gives such wonderful tips, mentioned my quilt a few times and posted my whole email with pictures on her blog.
